Ohorongo Game Reserve is a 40,000-hectare tract of wilderness located in the Namibian Highlands between Etosha National Park to the northeast and the Swakopmund in the south. This protected area has been conserving the natural integrity of the unique landscape for over 50 years through a sustainable safari model that offers guests an opportunity to immerse and connect with an ancient land.
Namibia is a place all of its own, and the location of Ohorongo Private Game Reserve occupies a unique semi-desert territory that offers a sense of wilderness not easily replicated.
To the west of Ohorongo is the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland, home of the specially adapted population of desert lions and elephants that defy expectations; to the northeast is Etosha National Park, where waterholes are humming with the presence of wildlife.
In the north-western highlands of the country, it is about 350km north of both Windhoek and Swakopmund and is ideally combined with a trip to Etosha and even further into the Zambezi region in the northeast for the Namibian trifecta. .
Ohorongo Private Game Reserve is home to some of Africa’s most sought-after predators – leopard, brown hyena, and cheetah – and more uniquely, it is an area where Namibia’s desert-adapted predators occur. Bat-eared fox and aardwolf are special sightings here, joining the iconic African predators on the sightings list.

Most significantly, Ohorongo’s 50-year history of wildlife conservation has made it a stronghold for the rare sable antelope, as well as roan, and black-faced impala. Gemsbok (oryx), Hartmann’s mountain zebra, springbok, giraffe, among other antelope occupy the plains, while black rhino are among the most spectacular animals to watch in this special place.

Birdlife in Namibia is something special and as a country it has attracted ornithologists, researchers, and tourists in search of birds for years. The unique arid savanna and semi-desert landscape of Ohorongo, plus the rocky gorges and outcrops of the reserve bring a variety of bird habitats into focus.
Bird families found in the north-western highlands of Namibia include shrikes, sparrow-weavers, hornbills, starlings, parrots, waxbills, larks, korhaans, cisticolas, francolins, buzzards, owls, goshawks, and eagles. The list goes on! Special colourful species, like rosy-faced lovebirds are seen in flocks around waterholes, and the iconic sound of the Burchell’s sandgrouse is ever-present.
Namibia’s climate is for the most part, dry and sunny, which makes it a good year-round destination, but the temperatures in peak summer and winter are extreme and require preparation.
The best time for game viewing is in winter – the driest months – from about July to October. Wildlife tends to gather around waterholes making them easier to spot and their movements easier to predict. Early mornings and night times can be very cold, and game drives will require headgear, gloves, and multiple layers to keep warm. The rainy season is short-lived and doesn’t ordinarily affect the desert regions in the west, but during January and February, the vegetated landscapes transform into greenery and old dormant riverbeds spring to life, which is a time of celebration in the country.
Essential items on the packing list for Ohorongo include walking boots, binoculars, and a hat. The landscape is vast and there are plenty of desert adapted bird species to keep an eye out for. The sun shines all day, every day, so keeping protected with sunglasses, a hat, and sun screen is recommended.
Neutral coloured clothing made of a lightweight material are best and most comfortable for this experience. A warm fleece and windbreaker for evenings and game drives are essential for winter visitors. Pack your camera and necessary accessories and charging cables, so that you can capture the magic.
Expect to feel at home in a place that once was the home of the Ohorongo owners. There is as much opportunity for adventure and excitement as there is for down time in a comfortable, calming environment.
